“Initially, the site is in English, but later, the Hindi language will be added. One million hit by floods in Assam, situation critical
Guwahati:The flood situation in Assam continues to be critical with an estimated one million people displaced and 15 dead.The army soldiers are engaged in a massive relief and rescue mission, officials said.
"According to latest reports, 16 of the state`s 27 districts have been hit by the floods. About one million people have been displaced and 15 are dead. The overall situation continues to be critical," Assam Relief and Rehabilitation minister Bhumidhar Barman said.
A government statement today said that 1,346 villages were hit by the floods, affecting a land area of about 2,69,609 hectares. The cumulative figures are from the first wave of floods that began on May 28. This is the second wave of floods that began a fortnight ago. In 2004, more than 200 people were killed in floods in Assam.

10 women burnt to death in Pune factory
A major fire followed by a loud blast in a chemical factory in Pune on Wednesday left 10 workers dead and 10 injured, the police said. All the victims were women.
The factory produces raw material for a Kolkata-based ammunitions manufacturer, the police said.
The blast took place around 4 pm, in one of the containers of chemicals, used for manufacturing ammunitions, at the Sai Enterprises and Sai Industries factory in the Bhosari industrial belt on the outskirts of the city. (read more...)

PM announces slew of measures for Assam
Prime minister Manmohan Singh on Tuesday announced a series of developmental measures for Assam to raise its educational standards, improve infrastructure and the level of its security. He also offered a Rs250 crore grant for the integrated development of the Bodoland Territorial Council.
The announcement was made as the prime minister returned to the capital after a two-day visit to Assam. During the visit he met chief minister Tarun Gogoi and his cabinet colleagues to discuss the memorandum they presented to him.

Jammu protesters deny 'blockade' of Kashmir
Jammu: The Amarnath Yatra Sangarsh Samiti (AYSS) on Tuesday denied they it had created an "economic blockade" of the Kashmir Valley.
AYSS is an umbrella organisation of different social groups spearheading the agitation for the restoration of land allotment to Amarnath shrine board.

Rs40 lakh-crore laundered every year in India
Mumbai: More than Rs40 lakh-crore ($1trillion) is being laundered every year by drug dealers, arms traffickers and other criminals in India, according to a report by audit and consulting firm KPMG released here.

Patna: Forty one labourers were killed and over two dozen injured in Bihar's Lakhisarai district when a rice laden truck overturned and fell into a river due to poor condition of the road, the police said Sunday.
